About Me

I am passionate about all things related to food - the local market is decidedly my glorified candy store. The (normally) nonexistent shopaholic in me emerges in the presence of fresh edibles and the kitchen is my playground.

More recently I've begun to venture beyond the precise measurements of the infinite recipes I browse and collect with wide-eyed fascination. Continuously inspired by cooks, foodies, vendors etc. I cross paths with, I am having a blast by tinkering around with flavors and ingredients, lending my own style to a dish.

First Bite will chronicle my interactions with street food vendors as I eat my way around the world. (Read my first post for more on my motivations on this subject). My access to internet will be sporadic during my travels so posts will occur after my visit to each of 14 destinations [Spain, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kobe, Yokohama, Hawaii, and Guatemala] around 1-2 weeks apart. Please feel free to leave me comments, tidbits of your thoughts along the way.

What's in a name?

Too often we are unconscious of our first bites of a meal. Perhaps we have become desensitized, eating to satisfy a physical craving, and fail to enjoy beyond a primal necessity. However the first bites of food, often the most anticipated and the best, set the stage for the meal to come. If we can rediscover the freshly heated, perfectly harmonized mouthful of that first bite, we may capture the pure essence of food. I hope to bring you these first bites from my travels from around the world.
